Middle Years Program: (ages 12-16)
According to IB, the MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is a five-year programme (G6-10). Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Program (CP). In the final year of the programme, optional MYP eAssessment provides IB-validated grades based on examinations and course work.
Personal Project
MYP students in their final year explore an area of personal interest over an
extended period. It provides them the opportunity to consolidate their learning and
develop important skills they’ll need in both further education and life beyond the
classroom. It also helps them develop confidence to become principled, lifelong
learners.
Elements of the personal project
The personal project formally assesses students’ approaches to
learning (ATL) skills for self-management, research,
communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration.
The project is made up of a process, a product and a reflective
report.
1. process —ideas, criteria, developments, challenges, plans,
research, possible solutions and progress reports
2. product or outcome—evidence of tangible or intangible
results: what the student was aiming to achieve or create
3. report—an account of the project and its impact, to a structure
that follows the assessment criteria. The report describes both
the process of creating the project and an evaluation of the
impact of the process on the student or their learning.
The report is assessed by the supervisor and externally
moderated by the IB to ensure a globally consistent standard of
excellence. Each project is awarded a final achievement grade.
Community Project
Through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) projects, students experience the
responsibility of completing a significant piece of work over an extended period of
time.
MYP projects encourage students to reflect on their learning and
the outcomes of their work – key skills that prepare them for
success in further study, the workplace and the community.
Students who complete the MYP in Year 3 or Year 4 complete the
community project. All students who complete the MYP in Year 5
complete the personal project.
The community project provides an important opportunity for
students ages 13-14 to collaborate and pursue service learning.
Schools register all MYP Year 5 students for external moderation of
the personal project, promoting a global standard of quality.
MYP projects are student-centred and age-appropriate, and they
enable students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle
of inquiry, action and reflection.
